Earth conscious, hand loomed toys
Weaving Hope was born out of a family trip to Sri Lanka when Joe and Nicky, original founders of the company, met the women making beautiful hand loomed toys. By the time they left Sri Lanka they felt compelled to support these talented craftspeople and find a way to sell their toys in the UK.
Weaving Hope’s collection is designed to encourage imaginative and interactive play in young children. Perfect for pre schoolers, their range is completely plastic free, vegan friendly and made with non toxic dyes.
The rural Sri Lankan female artisans who produce the range are supported with flexible hours and childcare facilities for young children and homework spaces for older children. This safe environment empowers more women to work, securing an income for themselves and to support their family.
The artisans are highly skilled in this traditional craft, with a good weaver needing around six months training and practice to become proficient – to set up a loom takes a whole day! Great concentration, mathematical ability and dexterity are required, as the fine warp threads have to be carefully positioned to achieve the correct pattern.
This highly skilled process is labour intensive, but not energy hungry. Log burners heat the water for washing and dyeing the cotton before it is woven into cloth. The dyeing process takes place in a rural area and the wood is sourced locally, with regular planting of new trees to replace what is used. The run-off water is air cooled, then filtered through sand and carbon before being used to irrigate the grounds.
The final product is a beautiful, handmade toy which will be provide hours of entertainment and fun, as well as being a long-lasting and quality item to keep in your family for generations.
